The United Nations (UN) is hiring an receive information officer for September 2024 in New York. This position is located in the Outreach Division of the Department of Global Communications (DGC). The incumbent reports to the Chief of the Education Outreach Section. The Education Outreach Section takes the lead in strategy, planning, development, and implementation of global education initiatives on key issues, goals, and objectives of the United Nations, including through its Outreach Programme on Transatlantic Slave Trade and Slavery, the International Day of Peace, and Model UN programs. Where appropriate, the Education Outreach Section works with departments, funds, and agencies to develop ways to implement educational activities system-wide and to incorporate the key messages and themes into all relevant events and products.

Responsibilities
- Within the delegated authority, the public information officer will be responsible for the following duties:
- Manages the United Nations Outreach Programme on Transatlantic Slave Trade and Slavery, as well as the United Nations Model UN Programme.
- Takes the lead in strategy, planning, development, and implementation of communications initiatives; where appropriate, works with departments, funds, and agencies to develop ways to implement initiatives system-wide and to incorporate the message and themes into all relevant events and products.
- Identifies sources and seeks funding and other assistance for major initiatives.
- Provides advice and expertise to managers, senior officers, and other public information staff on a range of public affairs issues, methods, and approaches; anticipates and resolves communications and public relations issues and problems.
- Develops strategic partnerships with key constituencies to elicit support for and maximize the impact of promotional objectives; serves as a spokesperson and principal liaison to media organizations, governmental bodies, national groups, private sector organizations, educational organizations, international organizations, civil society, etc.
- Prepares or oversees the preparation of a diverse range of information and communications products in support of major initiatives.
- Drafts complex material for UN publications, web sites, exhibits, and social media accounts, and edits drafts prepared by junior officers.
- Evaluates the results and impact of communications activities.
- Represents the institution in meetings and conferences; fulfills speaking engagements; makes presentations to groups on UN activities and advocates for issues of concern; organizes media coverage and arranges for media contacts, briefings, and interviews; organizes seminars, lectures, conferences, and public events (both in person and online) on issues related to the United Nations Outreach Programme on the Transatlantic Slave Trade and Slavery, the United Nations Model UN Programme, and relevant international days.
- Builds information networks; plans and oversees the maintenance of publicly accessible information materials on the United Nations; plans and develops outreach activities, including for youth and students.
- Manages the publication program; produces or oversees the production of materials for print, electronic, voice, and visual media.
- Assists in the day-to-day operation of the unit, including participating in the coordination of substantive and administrative activities of the unit, interpreting and disseminating policy, providing procedural advice, improving reporting systems, handling operational and administrative queries, preparing budget submissions, establishing and/or coordinating training programs, and monitoring and evaluating results.
- Coordinates and directs a diverse team of public information staff and mentors and supervises the work of junior officers on specific projects.
Education
- An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, or a related field is required.
- A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.

Work Experience
- A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in strategic communications, public information, journalism, international relations, public administration, or a related area is required.
- Experience creating, implementing, and monitoring communication strategies and organizing education outreach activities is required.
- Experience liaising with international organizations, governments, donors, and/or civil society is required. Experience managing a multicultural team is desirable.
- Experience working on issues related to the transatlantic trade in enslaved Africans and/or anti-racism is desirable.

Languages
- English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
- For the post advertised, fluency in English is required.
- Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.
