UNEP is hiring a Communication Consultant for the vacancy available in Nairobi, Kenya. The main objective of consultancy is to contribute to the efficient implementation of the projects “Sustainable Management Conservation and Restoration of Freshwater, Coastal and Marine Ecosystems and Resources” and “Preventing and addressing the degradation of freshwater and marine ecosystems from source to sea”, especially its key area “Supporting strategies, capacity, and data for global wastewater and environmental surveillance in Africa,” by executing the specified tasks on communication and stakeholder engagement.

Vacancy Objective

  • The main objective of the position of communications consultant is to define an overall communication strategy for the implementation of UNEP’s projects “Preventing and addressing the degradation of freshwater and marine ecosystems from source to sea” and “Sustainable Management Conservation and Restoration of Freshwater, Coastal, and Marine Ecosystems and Resources”.
  • Specifically, the communications consultant is expected to produce more efficient and strategic communication products and develop awareness-raising material to increase knowledge on related topics among the various relevant stakeholders.
  • The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.
  • Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.
  • The overall objective of UNEP’s Ecosystems Division is to support countries in conserving, restoring, and sustainably managing their terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecosystems, the biodiversity they contain, and the products and services they provide for human well-being and prosperity.
  • The Division’s mandate is to address the environmental causes and effects of an ecosystem’s approach, including the consequences of disasters and conflicts.
  • It helps countries develop policies and programs to respond to ecosystem challenges, reduce pollution from land-based activities, increase resilience to climate change, and reflect linkages between poverty and environment in their development planning.
  • Two projects of the Marine and Freshwater Branch, namely “Preventing and addressing the degradation of freshwater and marine ecosystems from source to sea” and “Sustainable Management Conservation and Restoration of Freshwater, Coastal, and Marine Ecosystems and Resources,” were recently approved. Communication and outreach are key components for the success of these projects.
  • The project document “Preventing and addressing the degradation of freshwater and marine ecosystems from source to sea” includes three key areas of work: 1) Enhancing Wastewater, Nutrient Management, and Sanitation Provision for Marginalized Coastal Communities in Sabah, Malaysia; 2) Supporting strategies, capacity, and data for global wastewater and environmental surveillance in Africa; and 3) Capacity development projects on water quality in the Wider Caribbean Region, including the Gulf of Mexico.
  • This consultant will work under direct supervision of the Programme Management Officer on wastewater at the Source to Sea Pollution Unit (SSPU), in close coordination with the Head of Freshwater Unit and the Head of the Coastal and Marine Unit, under the overall supervision of the Principal Coordinator of the Marine and Freshwater Branch.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • 1. Design the Communication and Outreach Strategy (COS) for the Source to Sea project and key areas of work, in close consultation with the other colleagues in the Branch, Communications Division, project partners, and other relevant stakeholders, including its ‘First Year Implementation Plan’, and two annexes, one for the Global Wastewater Initiative (GWWI) and another for the Global Partnership on Nutrient Management (GPNM).
  • 2. Design the Stakeholder Engagement Plan (SEP) of the two branch projects in close consultation with project partners and other relevant stakeholders.
  • 3. Implement the COS and SEP for the Source to Sea project and key areas of work, including the production of press releases, web stories, technical highlights, social media cards, videos, briefing notes, speeches, presentations, op-eds, other communication products for key events and dates; regular and special issues newsletters for GPNM and GWWI; and any other awareness-raising material as required to increase knowledge on the related topics among various relevant stakeholders.
  • 4. Monitoring and Reporting: monitor and evaluate the effectiveness and impact of communication strategies and activities; prepare regular progress reports, including analysis of communication trends and recommendations for adjustments to the strategy.

Qualifications/special skills

  • A bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, graphic design, marketing, or a closely related field is required.
  • A master’s degree in journalism, communications, or a related field is desirable.
  • minimum of 7 years of professional work experience at the national and/or international level in the field of in communications and outreach is required proven track record of creating, designing and using at least 30 high-quality communications products, such as web stories, fact sheets, press releases, social media cards and other assets, in international organization is desirable Experience in designing and implementing stakeholder engagement plans is desirable Experience working inclusively and collaboratively with a diverse array of partners, encompassing grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, as well as authorities at various levels.
  • Additionally, be familiar with communication tools and approaches for development. Proficient in database management; highly computer literate with a strong familiarity with office technological equipment.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in written and oral English is required. Working knowledge of other UN official languages is desirable.
